Spotlight with Annabelle Giwa Amu

Annabelle Giwa Amu AKA brownie as she is fondly called is the CEO of the browniecakerie, YouTuber and content curator of

I got to know brownie in 2012 when I subscribed to her YouTube channel because I enjoyed her rants, her makeup tutorials and inspiration.
Fast forward to 2015 I discovered she was into cakes and trust me I brought the cake and to be honest, it was one of the sweetest cake I’ve ever tasted. I totally love her entrepreneurship spirit.
Let’s meet brownie!

tell me a little about yourself and what you do?

My name is Bella, I’m 23 years old. My current favourite colour is yellow, I’d rather drink my vegetables than eat them!

I’m a brownie. this basically means I do a lot of different things, but most importantly, I’m a story teller. i like to document things I do, wear, bake, experiences i’ve had in the hopes that I reach someone in a special way. I blog, I bake and I’m a youtuber

Can you talk about one defining moment when you realised you have passion for bakery?

When I first decided to come back to Nigeria, I had a year to find my feet. I was empty and lost and I remembered how happy baking had made me when i was younger, i decided to give it a leisurely shot. the rest, as they say is history. I’m still a learner but I must say, i’m even enjoying my mistakes!

How do you balance being a student and an entrepreneur?

It’s all about planning. I never take gigs when I know I have a test the next week and I don’t turn on my business line while I have exams. I make sure I do all my school work during the week so I can have my weekends laying beside my oven whisking some eggs for my next experiment.

How would you describe the stage you’re at now in your life ?

I honestly think for once that I’m exactly where I’m meant to be. I’ve set goals for myself and i finally know what I want to do with my life. There’s no feeling quite like knowing you’re on the right track, thanks be to God

Don’t be bitter
Be better

Are you content with where you are now?

I really am! There are times I feel overwhelmed, definitely! But my joy has come full circle

What does success mean to you?

Success to me is reaching the goals I’ve set out for myself. Me being able to be self sufficient, Me being able to have a God filled home with a husband and children I love boundlessly and a flourishing business. Yup, if I had all that, I’d consider myself as successful as I can ever get!

How do you handle challenges either in your career or daily life?

Prayer, Tears, Advice from my loved ones. Much like everyone else, lol

How do you deal with criticism and negativity?

I take everything with a pinch of salt. The things I’m confident in, when I receive hate or whatever, duck’s feathers. For the things I’m not so confident about, I try to draw something constructive from the comment.

What won’t you do in the name of fashion?

Lol, be uncomfortable for extended periods of time. Not for me

Any specific message for your fans here in Nigeria and around the globe?

The same message I  send out in every love letter/post I write! ‘Be Better Brownie!’

Your empowering quotes.

Like in 9, Be Better! to me, it’s more than just doing something. It’s that point where you’ve stopped stressing over what you want to improve and immerse yourself in your goal you. I choose to ‘Be Better’ everytime!
